Today is my brother Andrew's birthday. He would have been 27.

Birthday

We were always friends. I was a big sister. Am I still a big sister even if he's no longer here? I've decided so. You never stop being a big sister. You remember the ache in your heart at the thought of anyone hurting that little brother. Of anyone making him sad or hurt or embarrassed. You cluck over him like a miniature mother hen and invite him to your tea parties with real hot chocolate.

Easter

You remember having a partner in crime. A travel buddy on any given road trip. Another person to play chinese jump rope with besides a wooden chair. He was always game for whatever harebrained idea or talent show I proposed.

You remember the pretend monorail driver of the red train on the way home from Disney World after you declared a truce from whopping each other with the old school middle seatbelt made of lead.

Hanging out at a Wedding

Two peas in a pod. Someone who loved you no matter how dorky you were and vice versa. Someone that shared your history, knew all the family stories, the sad ones, the ones so funny you could pee your pants from laughing, and the mundane in between. That person who loved your mom and dad in the exact same way that you do.

Busch Gardens in Florida

The kid who gave the best hugs, and could comfort someone like nobody else. After he got past the weird pre-teen boy hugs that guys do so there is no accidental brushing of the chestage area.

The boy that started 2 fires in one month.

Christmas

The keeper of all of our inside jokes, dance routines and made up games.

The best son, the best brother. My best friend of all time.

Christmas

1/4 of my family.

Halloween

1/2 of my parents kids.

Chillin at a Wedding

My favorite boy. And a huge chunk of my heart.

Busy Bees!!!

I miss you, kid.

It's good that you can remember all those memories, all those different kinds of memories about him. That's what keeps people real after they're gone.

i am so glad you celebrate your brother!
he is so lucky to have you as a sister and i don't say that in past tense cause it's important like that.

I am sure he was right next to you giving you a big hug as you wrote that. I know that because my mom gives me hugs all the time, too.

Thank you everyone for your sweet words. That was a lot to put out there, but hell -- it's my blog and I can say what I want to ;)

I agree with Bonney, hold on to those memories. I'm also sending you a big fat hug, or if I see you tonight, I'll just give you one.=)

Happy Birthday, Andrew.

Thank you for the beautiful post and delightful pictures, Mariss.

And by the way, if you think the weightiness of this post was going to get you out of being teased about that sailor dress, you're so, so wrong... ;)

Marissa,
I popped in today, many days after you posted this tribute to your brother, to catch up from yet another break I'd taken. I intended on leaving a comment on every post that I'd missed but after reading this one, I feel silly commenting on any other but this.
What beautiful memories you have of a wonderful relationship. It seems to me that humor was a big part of what connected you two (and it's one of the things I like best about you). You are really lucky to have had such an amazing brother/sister relationship. And you've done a beautiful job of honoring it.
You're in my thoughts.
